Está ubicado en una de las zonas en auge de Barcelona, el 22@, y los sándwiches fríos y calientes configuran una carta muy urbana en un ambiente acogedor.
“La base de todas mis recetas es el pan, un ingrediente que cuido especialmente”, explica Xavier Uño, un tipo muy simpático a quien se le nota una auténtica devoción por los bocatas. Cuenta que hay muchos lugares en Barcelona donde se puede comer un buen bocadillo, pero ninguno como el suyo. Y, tras haber probado siete de sus especialidades, me lo creo.
Sus propuestas, preparadas con más de 10 tipos de panes diferentes (bagel, pan de molde alemán, foccacia, pan de coca del Maresme…), pertenecen a una categoría muy superior. ¡Ojo con este clásico reinventado!: el bikini preparado con coca de pan especial supercrujiente. Pero esta no es la única receta sorprendente. Prueben, por ejemplo, el pollo al ras el hanout en coca de pan especial o bien el taco de atún a la plancha con algas marinas, mayonesa de wasabi, pepino y chips de zanahoria. Más curioso es el sándwich preparado con pan inglés de semillas, plátano, beicon, mantequilla de cacahuetes y miel, el favorito del rey del rock&roll, Elvis Presley, que le da su nombre.
Quienes habéis sucumbido a la fiebre de la hamburguesa también encontraréis en el Carrot Café uno de los mejores ejemplares de Barcelona: 200 gramos de placer cárnico, para los más moderados, o 400 gramos si optáis por un Bestial (el nombre no podía ser más acertado para esta doble hamburguesa). Para maridar estas propuestas, hay variedad: unas 40 cervezas internacionales como la Chouffe, la Rosita, la Kriek, la Duff, la Delirium…
Pero el súmmum se alcanza –si sois fanáticos de Nueva York- al descubrir que es uno de los escasísimos locales de Barcelona cuya carta cuenta con una sándwich de… pastrami. ¡’Oh my god’! El chef del Carrot Café incluso presume, divertido, de que algún que otro turista estadounidense ha alucinado con su adaptación de este bocadillo típicamente yanqui. No hay mejor prueba de su calidad.
No se trata de la única especialidad importada del otro lado del charco. Descomunales son la tarta de queso, el brownie y el pastel de zanahoria (la perdición de Xavier Uño, que incluso ha inspirado el nombre del local) que se descubren detrás de una vitrina. Imposible resistirse, aunque sean auténticas bombas calóricas. Eso sí, acabas desabrochándote el pantalón.
Lo mejor: la comida, la variedad de cervezas, el local, la amabilidad… ¿Qué más se puede pedir?
Lo mejorable: I¡imposible elegir entre tantas apetitosas propuestas aunque, pensándolo mejor, que siga así.
